College Persistence: from first to second year
Background
Introduction
Many students find it difficult, for a variety of academic, financial and personal reasons to continue college year after year. Monitoring college persistence demonstrates to educators how well prepared as well as how well supported a student or group of students is. Unfortunately 30% of students who enter college do not return for a second year (Schneider, 2010). Between 2003 and 2008 states appropriated almost $6.2 billion in financial support to students who did not return for a second year (Schneider, 2010). It is therefore imperative for not only educators but also colleges and policy makers ensure that students not just enroll in college but graduate.
